Associative Strength Theory of Recognition Memory for Pitch1

چکیده

Recognition memory for pitch was studied by means of a delayed comparison task, with the standard (S) tone and the comparison (C) tone separated by a variable delay interval (O-180 set). Evidence is presented for the existence of an unsigned familiarity or similarity dimension, in addition to the signed pitch-difference dimension. Subjects relied on familiarity exclusively in the same-different judgment and used both dimensions in the higher-same-lower judgment. There appear to be two memory traces, short-term and intermediate-term, which are decaying exponentially to zero at very different rates. The decay of the short-term trace appears to be an essentially passive, temporal decay process, rather than an interference process, since the frequencysimilarity and intensity of the interference tone have no effect on the rate of decay. The decay of the memory trace appears to have the same form and rate regardless of the initial level of acquisition and regardless of the frequency difference between the S and C tones.

AN IMPROVED CONTROLLED CHAOTIC NEURAL NETWORK FOR PATTERN RECOGNITION

A sigmoid function is necessary for creation a chaotic neural network (CNN). In this paper, a new function for CNN is proposed that it can increase the speed of convergence. In the proposed method, we use a novel signal for controlling chaos. Both the theory analysis and computer simulation results show that the performance of CNN can be improved remarkably by using our method. By means of this...

Overdependence on degraded gist memory in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) reduces associative effects on false recognition in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott task, either due to impaired memory for gist or impaired use of gist in memory decisions. Gist processes were manipulated by blocking or mixing studied words according to their associations and by varying the associative strength between studied and nonstudied words at test. Both associativ...

Two Dimensions Are Not Better than One: STREAK and the Univariate Signal Detection Model of Remember/Know Performance.

We evaluated STREAK and the univariate signal detection model of Remember/Know (RK) judgments in terms of their ability to fit empirical data and produce psychologically meaningful parameter estimates. Participants studied pairs of words and completed item recognition tests with RK judgments as well as associative recognition tests. Fits to the RK data showed that the univariate model provided ...

False recognition production indexes in forward associative strength (FAS) lists with three critical words.

BACKGROUND False memory illusions have been widely studied using the Deese/Roediger-McDermott paradigm (DRM). In this paradigm, participants study words semantically related to a single nonpresented critical word. In a memory test critical words are often falsely recalled and recognized. METHOD The present study was conducted to measure the levels of false recognition for seventy-five Spanish...

RUNNING HEAD: Associative-Activation and False Memory Development An Associative-Activation Theory of Children’s and Adults’ Memory Illusions

The effects of associative strength and gist relations on rates of children’s and adults’ true and false memories were examined in three experiments. Children aged 5 through 11 and universityaged adults participated in a standard Deese/Roediger-McDermott false memory task using DRM and category lists in two experiments and in the third, children memorized lists that differed in associative stre...
